Aktuell unterhalten die NATO-Staaten eine dauerhafte Truppenpräsenz von je einem Bataillon in den baltischen Staaten und Polen. Die USA haben in Osteuropa zudem in Polen bilateral Truppen permanent stationiert. Defense One berichtet nun, Litauen versuche die USA dazu zu bewegen, in dem neu im Land eröffneten Camp Herkus zu einer dauerhaften Stationierung von SoldatInnen zu bewegen: „At this remote base, which opened in August and is now the temporary home of hundreds of American troops, government officials excitedly showed off the new 7-million-euro facility […] for Vilnius, these comforts aren’t just about making their guests feel at home. They aim to entice Washington to turn its rotational deployments of U.S. troops into a permanent stay, and deter the Russian forces that frequently deploy and exercise in Belarus, less than 10 miles away.” (jw)
