Am 2. August soll die Fregatte „Bayern“ Kurs Richtung Indo-Pazifik nehmen. KritikerInnen wandten ein, China werde sich davon wohl nur schwer beeindrucken lassen. Dagegen argumentieren nun Kapitänleutnant Moritz Brake und Sebastian Bruns vom Institut für Sicherheitspolitik an der Universität Kiel beim Center for International Maritime Security, indem sie auf die erhebliche Symbolwirkung dieses Schrittes verweisen: „Therefore, the mere fact that Germany, which otherwise acts very cautiously towards China, is sending a ship at all is a surprisingly clear signal. Moreover, the choice of the ship to be sent is relevant. Frigates are the most combat capable warship that the German Navy can deploy. While a single frigate cannot and will not pose a military threat to China, Germany is visibly expressing its message and interests through its deployment.” (jw)
