US-Marine: Überambitioniert

Das US-Verteidigungsministerium plant einen massiven Aufwuchs seiner Kriegsmarine von derzeit 297 auf 355 Schiffe 2035 und – seit kurzem – auf 500 im Jahr 2045 (siehe IMI-Aktuell 2020/662). Selbst der ehemalige NATO-Oberkommandierende in Europa James Stavridis hält das bei Bloomberg für überambitioniert. Ursprünglich war keine Erhöhung auf über 355 vorgesehen – Stavridis weist auf : „How did things escalate from a ‚need‘ for 355 warships to a request for 500? And, above all, is this a sensible and achievable goal? The secretary’s new number is the result of a long-delayed study called Battle Force 2045. […] Clearly, buying so many ships will stress the defense budget. Resources will have to be diverted from the Army, Air Force and the defense agencies. Some critics are rightfully concerned about the long-term sustainment costs, such as maintenance and manning.” (jw)
