Wie gut viele eigentlich den Republikanern nahestehende US-Hardliner mit Hillary Clinton als Präsidentin leben könnten, unterstreicht einer der einflussreichsten Neokonservativen, Robert Kagan (siehe zu Kagan IMI-Analyse 2012/019). Der frühere Chefberater der republiknischen Präsidentschaftskandidaten John McCain und Mitt Romney deutete bereits 2014 an, er könne sich auch vorstellen, Clinton bei der nächsten Wahl zu untersützen. Nun veröffentlichte er einen Artikel in der Washington Post, in dem er dies offiziell umsetzte: „For this former Republican, and perhaps for others, the only choice will be to vote for Hillary Clinton. The party cannot be saved, but the country still can be.“
Aus Sicht von Jacob Heilbrunn, dem Herausgeber des National Interest, ist Kagan hier nur der erste, vor allem die Unterstützer Marco Rubio, der in seinem Unterstützerteam zahlreiche prominente Neokonservative um sich versammelt hat (siehe IMI-Standpunkt 2016/004), könnten Clinton unterstützen. Dies gelte laut Heilbronn v.a., falls sich Donald Trump bei den Republikanern durchsetzen sollte, da dieser isolationistische Tendenzen an den Tag lege. „Trump represents everything that the neocons believed that they had purged from the GOP. He represents continuity with the Buchananite wing, the belief that America should tend to its own knitting before launching hopeless wars abroad. […] Here we come full circle. The origins of the neocons are in the Democratic Party. Should Clinton become the Democratic nominee and Trump the Republican one, a number of neocons may make common cause with Clinton.
