Anfang August hatte der Guardian einen Beitrag von Harry Davies und Yuval Abraham veröffentlicht, wonach eine Einheit des isarelischen Militärs, die berüchtigte Unit 8200, Microsoft Datenzentren in den Niederlanden und Microsofts KI Diensleistungen zur Massenüberwachung der palästinensischen Bevölkerung, konkret dem belauschen nahezu der gesamten Mobilfunkkommunikation nutze.
Microsoft hatte bereits damals angekündigt, die Vorwürfe zu prüfen, und veröffentlichte nun ein überraschenden Ergebnis:
„While our review is ongoing, we have found evidence that supports elements of The Guardian’s reporting. This evidence includes information relating to IMOD consumption of Azure storage capacity in the Netherlands and the use of AI services. We therefore have informed IMOD of Microsoft’s decision to cease and disable specified IMOD subscriptions and their services, including their use of specific cloud storage and AI services and technologies.“
Im gleichen Beitrag wird versichert, dass Microsoft keinen unmittelbaren Zugang auf die Datenverarbeitung der IDF genutzt habe, weil es auch den Datenschutz seiner Kunden achte.
Harry Davies und Yuval Abraham berichten nun wiederum im Guardian über diese Entscheidung von Microsoft, die sie durch Angaben von Mitarbeiteten bestätigt sehen. Demnach spreche aber viel dafür, dass die entsprechenden Daten durch die IDF rechtzeitig auf Server von Amazon Web Services (AWS) migriert wurden:
„According to several sources, the enormous repository of intercepted calls – which amounted to as much as 8,000 terabytes of data – was held in a Microsoft datacentre in the Netherlands. Within days of the Guardian publishing the investigation, Unit 8200 appears to have swiftly moved the surveillance data out of the country. According to sources familiar with the huge data transfer outside of the EU country, it occurred in early August. Intelligence sources said Unit 8200 planned to transfer the data to the Amazon Web Services cloud platform. Neither the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) nor Amazon responded to a request for comment.“
