Arabische NATO?

Strategic Forecast (02.05.2014) berichtet von Plänen zur Gründung einer „Arabischen NATO“. Das vor allem von Saudi Arabien vorangetriebene Vorhaben begründe sich aus der Sorge vor einem schrittweisen Rückzug der USA aus der Region und der Konfrontation mit dem Iran. Es gebe aber auch innenpolitische Gründe: “an expanded and strengthened alliance could be used to clamp down on outbreaks of internal dissent and safeguard the authoritarian rule of many of these royal families.“ Allerdings ist Startegic Forecast skeptisch, ob das Vorhaben angesichts der diversen Interessenslagen allzu weit gedeihen wird: „There is certainly momentum toward increased military cooperation within the GCC, which could extend to including Jordan and Morocco in the bloc’s activities. The significant existing tensions and differences in outlook, however, will prevent these countries from forming a truly effective Arab version of NATO.“ (jw)
