US-Militärstrategie: Großmachtkonkurrenz

Nachdem bereits die Nationale Sicherheitsstrategie vom 18. Dezember 2017 China und Russland als Bedrohungen der USA eingestuft hatte (siehe IMI-Standpunkt 2018/001), verwundert es nicht weiter, dass nun auch die daraus abgeleitete Nationale Militärstrategie nachzog. Zwar werde die USA auch weiter Anti-Terroroperationen durchführen, sie seien aber nicht mehr wie bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt die Priorität der US-Militärpolitik, so Verteidigungsminister James Mattis bei der Vorstellung der Strategie: “We will continue to prosecute the campaign against terrorists, but great power competition—not terrorism—is now the primary focus of U.S. national security.” In der Nationalen Militärstrategie selbst heißt es dann: „The central challenge to U.S. prosperity and security is the reemergence of long-term, strategic competition by what the National Security Strategy classifies as revisionist powers. It is increasingly clear that China and Russia want to shape a world consistent with their authoritarian model – gaining veto authority over other nations’ economic, diplomatic, and security decisions.“ (jw)
